Spencer, The Great

Spencer is holding me over until I can get a dog of my own. He belongs to the sculptor I work for and hangs out in the office during the day. Spencer is a Great Dane and huge. He is a beautiful boy and has many sides to his quirky dogness.

The Lover:
Spencer is very affectionate. He loves to give hugs. I try to prevent this from happening too often because when he stands up and puts his front paws over my shoulders he is about two feet taller than me, and I can barely hold him up. However, I am very open to snuggle sessions on the couch, which Spencer loves even more than I do. As soon as you sit down, he will come charging over and get on top of you, as soon as he figures out how to situate his massive body he nuzzles his head into you and all over your chest and neck and face. He doesn't lick, he just nuzzles. These intimate encounters with Spencer are just about all the lovin' I get these days, so I make sure they happen about once a week. As nice as they are, we realized pretty quickly that the snuggle sessions probably aren't a good idea. Anytime we have a visitor in the office and they sit down on the coach, Spencer thinks this is an open invitation to begin a snuggle session. It is very awkward trying to get him to stop. Some people laugh and are ok with it. But, it is really just hilarious to watch, because Spencer is so huge, and he takes up just about the whole couch, and it is just a very silly situation. Spencer also likes to pin you in your chair.

The Fighter:
As much as Spencer loves people, he really hates other dogs. I don't know if it is that he hates them, he just doesn't know how to play nice. And since he is so big, not nice can be really scary. Other dogs don't react well to big and scary. Lets just say Spencer doesn't get along with the other dogs on the compound. Due to recent attacks, anytime Spencer goes outside he has to wear a muzzle. This is really sad because he looks so pitiful, but you just can't go around attacking your own species. Funny, they don't make humans wear muzzles.

The Sad Boy:
Spencer gets very sad when John and Pamela go out of town. He will just stand there with his head resting on a desk or a couch looking very pathetic. Recently, with the whole muzzle situation he has been very depressed. I don't think he understands why everyone has been speaking to him in an angry tone and why no one will play rough with him anymore. It is really sad when you take him outside and he just stands there. He wont even pee. He will just nudge your leg with his nose until you finally give in and relieve him of the god awful muzzle.

The Insane:
Spencer is a completely different dog outside of the office. He gets riled up very easily and becomes completely unpredictable. Spencer has this thing he loves to do, which is entirely frightening due to his size. He likes to charge at you full speed and then at the last second veer. He also likes to ram into people's behinds. One time he ran and jumped through the second story open window of one of the warehouses. Spencer absolutely loves the Swiffer duster. Jason uses the Swiffer to dust and clean the small sculpture. Jason and I have hilarious times teasing Spencer with the duster. He goes absolutely bazurk over the thing and will not rest until he gets it in his mouth and shakes it all to pieces.

Spencer is a funny dog. Honestly, I am glad he is not my dog, but it sure is nice having him around at work. I can't wait until I can have a dog of my own. I think this day is coming soon.
